CHE Curriculum Course Descriptions

English 122: College Composition

College Composition is designed as an introduction to college academic writing. In this class, students learn and practice varied types of academic prose. Paper assignments include essays that are specifically designed to develop students' analytical skills and prepare them for the level of critical thought expected in other University of Northern Colorado courses. An emphasis is placed on grammar, organization, and logical reasoning.

English 123: College Research Paper

College Research Paper is designed to be an extension of English 122. The course develops further critical, analytical, and persuasive writing skills and emphasizes the proper collection and incorporation of researched sources in academic writing. Given the degree to which outside sources are fundamental to English 123, the course also emphasizes the importance of developing critical reading skills. Students will learn practical library skills including the use of library technology. They will learn and use the MLA citation form and will be exposed to other styles of citation such as APA and Chicago styles.

Unlike sections of English 123 taught through the English Department, CHE sections of English 123 incorporate a tutorial component along with a link to a library information class. Tutorials are constructed by dividing the regular class into two groups of 7 to 8. These students meet during the class week with a tutor or with their instructor to accomplish focused exercises, workshops, and study sessions that enhance material being covered in class. Students also meet with tutors in the Tutoring Center outside of class. Every CHE section of English 123 is also linked to a one-credit course in library information and technology, so students learn research techniques and hands-on library skills applied to the project on which they are working in the English course.

ET 100: Computer Applications for Composition

Taken in conjunction with English 122 during the fall semester, Educational Technology 100 is designed to provide CHE students with a fundamental and practical background in computer technology. Students will develop proficiency in word processing, presentation, web design, and digital imaging software as they build a digital portfolio of their work in English 122 and Educational Technology 100.
