CHE Students Present at National McNair Symposium Posted on September 8, 2008 by Julie Trujillo
Four CHE students, who are also members of the McNair Scholars program, returned Aug. 11, from the 16th Annual California McNair Scholars Symposium held at the University of California Berkeley. This was an opportunity for McNair Scholars Darsella Vigil, Charles Miles, Sandra Harmon, Jessica James, and Rahwa Meharena to present the results of their research projects in an academic venue. Over the course of the four-day symposium, McNair Scholars presented the culmination of their McNair research before an audience of academics, peers, friends and relatives.
More than three hundred other McNair Scholars representing 44 of the nation’s 179 McNair programs attended the symposium. Darsella Vigil presented her research on “Experiences of First Generation Students’ Entry and Persistence in Post-Secondary Education.” Charles Miles study explained “The Somali Labor Force and Their Perceptions of Employment in Northern Colorado’s Meatpacking Industry.” Sandra Harmon shared her research on “Self-Mastery and Life Satisfaction of Adult Children of Depressed Mothers: A Longitudinal Study.” Jessica James presented “The Researched Effects of Vanadium Compounds on Diabetes.” Lastly, Rahwa Meharena explained the results of her study on “African Americans in Commercials on BET and ABC networks.”
After their presentations, these McNair scholars also spoke with graduate program representatives and learned more about graduate admissions. The McNair Scholars Program is designed to prepare participants for doctoral studies through involvements in research and other scholarly activities. Like CHE, McNair is a federally funded TRIO program
Each of our scholars raved about the experience and shared their success stories. The CHE and McNair Program staff is extremely proud of the accomplishments of these scholars as they prepare themselves to be successful graduate students.
