What is CHE and SSS?

Four girls standing outsideFor over 20 years, the Center for Human Enrichment's TRIO sponsored Student Support Services (SSS) program has helped promote the academic and personal success of all University of Northern Colorado students who participate in it.

Student Support Services? TRIO?
From the TRIO website:

"The Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students..."

SSS, or Student Support Services, is one of the six programs designed by TRIO and concentrates mainly on "providing opportunities for academic development, assisting students with basic college requirements, and serving to motivate students towards the successful completion of their postsecondary education." (From the TRIO/SSS website).

The Center for Human Enrichment is the name, our name, for our version of this program.

The Center for Human Enrichment
Located on the first floor of UNC's Michener Library, CHE supports the guidelines of the Federal program by providing to its students the following services:

  • Advising - When tough dilemmas come about for our students, our certified advising staff will help them make decisions about everything from schedules and classes to finances and career choices.
  • Academic Help - Our close connection to UNC campus tutoring services, our own set of in-class English tutors, and various workshops given throughout the semester give our students the academic assistance they need to thrive in a university classroom.
  • Technology - An integrated computer lab contains all the tools that our students need to utilize to be successful in an age of increasing computerization. Further, we have available advanced technology to allow those of our students with a flair for the technological a place for experimentation and growth.
  • Curriculum - We staff full time faculty to teach the core English classes of incoming UNC freshmen. The years of experience that our professors bring to the classroom give our students the preperation they will need to transition into the world of academia.

Ultimately, CHE supports UNC's mission by helping to create and maintain a harmonious multicultural scholastic environment for the University's students, faculty and staff.
